Lukwago bail ruling set for July 30 amid health concerns

Justice David Matovu of the High Court will announce his decision on July 30, 2026, regarding the bail application of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. The hearing for the application took place in the judge’s chambers, with attendance restricted to Lukwago’s wife, his legal team, and the sureties.

The defense presented four individuals to stand as sureties for Lukwago, in addition to his personal undertaking to appear in court when summoned. Lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona, representing the defense, stated that all requirements for the bail application have been met.

During the proceedings, the defense team highlighted concerns about Lukwago’s health while he is in detention. They requested that he be allowed to receive treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital. However, the court did not grant this specific request outright.

Instead, Justice Matovu directed prison authorities to consult with medical professionals to ensure Lukwago receives appropriate medical attention while in custody. Sseggona commented that while physiotherapy might offer some pain relief, it would not address the broader medical issues Lukwago faces, noting limitations in specialized care within prison facilities.

Lukwago is facing trial for charges related to misprision of treason, and his legal team has previously emphasized his medical condition as grounds for his temporary release. Both the prosecution and defense have agreed on a timeline for submitting written arguments before the judge issues his ruling electronically.
