Mother's Shoes Sparked My Journey to Global Success, Says Cheptegei

Uganda’s celebrated long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei, has offered a candid look into his path from humble beginnings to becoming an Olympic champion and world record holder. In the debut episode of I&M Bank Uganda’s “A Chat With The CEO” podcast, Cheptegei detailed the early struggles and pivotal moments that shaped his illustrious career.

Cheptegei, the face of I&M Bank Uganda’s “On Your Side” campaign, recalled his athletic beginnings at just 17 years old. Inspired by the success of Stephen Kiprotich, he harbored dreams of global stardom but faced significant challenges, particularly with equipment.

“When I was starting my athletics career, it was not easy. I had struggles with equipment, but luckily, my mother bought me shoes during the vacation,” Cheptegei shared. He noted that despite doubts from others, he achieved a significant breakthrough within a year, attributing it to the belief and support he received.

The turning point, he identified, was his international debut at the Africa Cross Country Championships in March 2014. This led to him signing with a leading sports management agency and competing abroad. His second-place finish at the TCS World 10km Road Race in Bangalore, India, in May 2014, proved to be a significant motivator, reinforcing his belief in his potential to achieve great things.

Cheptegei also discussed managing pressure, the importance of his family and training partners, and his commitment to giving back through the Joshua Cheptegei Foundation. He emphasized the foundation’s work in fostering talent, education, and community welfare in his home region.

Looking ahead, Cheptegei expressed his transition from track to marathon running, citing his partnership with I&M Bank as a source of continued support for his future endeavors. He encouraged young Ugandans to “dare to dream” and focus on their aspirations, echoing his own experience of turning childhood ambitions into global achievements.
