Police Announce Movement Restrictions for National Cleaning Day

The Uganda Police Force has issued a stern warning to motorists, cyclists, and operators of water transport, informing them that movement will be restricted on all roads and waterways during the upcoming National Cleaning Day. This mandatory exercise is scheduled to commence this Saturday, with movement restrictions in place nationwide from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.

This three-hour lockdown is intended to ensure the success of the nationwide cleaning exercise and to encourage maximum public participation, according to Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke. During this period, the public is encouraged to remain within their localities and actively engage in the clean-up activities. Normal operations are expected to resume at 10:00 AM.

Only individuals and vehicles involved in essential and emergency services will be exempt from these restrictions. This includes emergency medical transport, for which relevant documentation will be required, and healthcare workers on duty who must carry valid identification. Security personnel, official security vehicles, and authorized cross-border travelers will also be permitted to move.

The National Cleaning Day initiative, announced by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, will be observed on the last Saturday of every month, starting July 25, 2026. The program mandates a three-hour community clean-up for all Ugandans, during which non-essential movement will be prohibited and businesses are expected to close.

Local governments have been directed to mobilize communities and identify key areas for cleaning. The Prime Minister also noted that President Yoweri Museveni has instructed the police and other security agencies to strictly enforce compliance, drawing lessons from previous public health measure enforcement.
