Alupo lauds Catholic Church's vital role in Uganda's development, urges peaceful elections and elder care

Vice President Jessica Alupo has extended her praise to the Catholic Church for its significant contributions to Uganda’s social and moral fabric, identifying the institution as a key ally in the government’s mission to enhance citizen welfare.

Hellena Alupo’s sentiments were conveyed by the state minister for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, during the St. Charles Lwanga Day festivities held at St. Kalooli Catholic Church in Nabweru-Kibwa. The Vice President highlighted the Church’s transformative impact on communities, particularly through its involvement in education, healthcare, and various social services.

“The Church has greatly contributed to improving the lives of our people and continues to complement government efforts in delivering essential services,” Alupo’s message stated, underscoring the collaboration between religious organizations and the state.

Minister Kyofatogabye took the opportunity to address the youth, urging them to embrace their duty of care towards the elderly. He stressed the societal value of respecting and supporting older members of the community.

Furthermore, Kyofatogabye appealed to all residents to uphold peace and reject any form of violence in the upcoming Local Council (LC) village chairperson elections. “Young people should take responsibility for looking after the elderly, and all residents must avoid acts of violence during the village chairperson elections,” he added.

The celebrations, which drew hundreds of faithful, also featured a homily from Monsignor John Baptist Ssebayiga, Parish Priest of St. Kizito Bwaise. He encouraged attendees to focus on both physical and spiritual purity, stating, “It is not enough to clean our homes and roads. We must also cleanse our hearts by turning away from sin and all forms of wrongdoing.”

Nansana Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Charles Lwanga also acknowledged the government’s efforts, citing programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM), road infrastructure projects, and the Emyooga initiative as beneficial to residents and crucial for improving livelihoods. He encouraged the community to leverage these opportunities for increased household income.

The St. Charles Lwanga Day event served as a moment for reflection on faith, service, peace, and community development.
