Speaker Oboth Defends Uganda's Open Approach to Ebola Response

Speaker Anita Among has asserted that Uganda’s commitment to transparency in managing Ebola outbreaks is a deliberate and principled stance.

Speaking in Parliament, Speaker Among highlighted that the nation has consistently chosen openness when addressing health crises, particularly Ebola. This approach, she explained, involves timely and accurate dissemination of information to the public and international partners, even when acknowledging potential economic impacts.

“We have always chosen openness over economic considerations when responding to Ebola,” Speaker Among stated, emphasizing that safeguarding lives and public health remains paramount. She indicated that transparency builds trust and facilitates a more coordinated and effective response from both domestic and international health organizations.

The Speaker’s remarks come amidst discussions about the balance between public health measures and economic activities during disease outbreaks. She stressed that while economic stability is important, it cannot come at the expense of the well-being of citizens.

Uganda has a history of managing outbreaks, and its experience has informed its strategy of early detection, reporting, and open communication.
