As Uganda gears up to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) is taking proactive steps to secure the nation’s aviation infrastructure. In Gulu, the UCAA has engaged local leaders, security agencies, and tourism partners to strengthen safety protocols and planning around aerodromes.
The focus of these discussions includes crucial aspects like land use planning, managing potential obstacles near airports, and safeguarding aerodromes from developments that could compromise flight safety. Gulu Airport is anticipated to play a significant role in facilitating travel for teams, fans, and officials between Entebbe and Northern Uganda during the tournament.
Kenneth Otim of UCAA highlighted that ensuring aerodromes are compliant and secure is vital for handling the expected surge in air traffic. This initiative comes in response to UCAA’s observations of increasing pressures on upcountry aerodromes, including unauthorized construction and inadequate waste management, which pose serious safety risks, such as attracting birds near flight paths.
Eng. Andrew Ambazimana, Principal Aerodrome Inspector at UCAA, noted that several airstrips, including those in Gulu, Pakuba, and Lira, face challenges that require immediate attention. The authority aims to foster stronger collaboration between UCAA, local governments, and aerodrome operators to ensure strict adherence to aviation safety regulations.
These preparations extend beyond AFCON 2027, aligning with Uganda’s broader strategy to modernize its aviation sector. Projects like the nearing completion of Kabaale International Airport and plans for Kidepo International Airport are part of this vision, with aspirations to upgrade Gulu Airport to international standards.
Local officials in Gulu have welcomed the UCAA’s engagement, recognizing the growing importance of air transport for regional development. They emphasize the need for forward-thinking planning to ensure Northern Uganda benefits fully from the aviation sector’s expansion and can effectively showcase its progress to the global community during AFCON.
