Telecom Infrastructure Vandalism Now Economic Sabotage, Government Warns

The Ugandan government is issuing a stern warning against the vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure, classifying such acts as economic sabotage. This strong stance comes as the nation accelerates its digital transformation agenda, emphasizing that telecom towers and equipment are vital national assets.

Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, Joyce Ssebugwawo, highlighted that these facilities are essential for critical services including emergency response, healthcare, education, and commerce. Attacks on this infrastructure disrupt network availability and limit access to crucial digital services, hindering national development.

Ssebugwawo made these remarks during a ceremony where ATC Uganda presented Shs20.9 billion to the Uganda Communications Commission’s Universal Service and Access Fund. This fund is dedicated to enhancing digital connectivity in underserved areas of the country.

The minister stressed that partnerships with the private sector are crucial for expanding digital access, especially in remote regions that may not be commercially viable for investment. She noted that the contribution from ATC Uganda signifies responsible corporate citizenship and a commitment to national development.

Beyond mere network expansion, the government is also focusing on ensuring affordable access and digital literacy for all citizens. Ssebugwawo cautioned that infrastructure without affordability or skills is futile, likening it to an unusable highway.

Furthermore, the government is calling for increased attention to emerging digital challenges such as cybersecurity, child online protection, consumer rights, and the spread of misinformation. Stakeholders are urged to prioritize digital safety as connectivity expands.
