Leaders representing the West Nile sub-region have coalesced under a unified development strategy, aiming to accelerate socio-economic transformation. This initiative, spearheaded by the West Nile Development Association (WENDA) and the West Nile Parliamentary Caucus, emerged from their recent meeting in Koboko.
A central pillar of the new agenda is the immediate operationalization of industrial parks. Over 400 acres have already been designated for these parks in Yumbe, Koboko, Madi-Okollo, and Nebbi districts, signaling a strong commitment to fostering industrial growth and value addition.
Further resolutions include establishing a regional Agricultural Mechanisation Centre, developing comprehensive District Environment and Climate Action Plans, advocating for extensive irrigation schemes, and planning the Fourth West Nile Diaspora Conference for Arua City in 2027. These steps are seen as crucial for addressing persistent challenges like high youth unemployment, low incomes, and insufficient private sector investment.
Executive Director of WENDA, Moses Akuma Odims, emphasized the need for a unified regional voice to effectively engage government and development partners. He stated that the new resolutions represent a “shared commitment” to move towards “strategic, evidence-based engagement” that will yield tangible benefits for the people of West Nile.
Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Michael Ondoga, Regional Coordinator for Operation Wealth Creation (OWC), highlighted the region’s strategic location bordering the DRC and South Sudan as a significant opportunity for trade. He urged a shift from mere production to enhanced productivity, value addition, and robust market linkages for key agricultural products like rice, coffee, and livestock.
Discussions also focused on strengthening the monitoring of government livelihood programs such as PDM, Emyooga, and GROW, alongside expanding agricultural extension services. Members of Parliament, like Phiona Onzima, stressed the importance of close collaboration between WENDA and the caucus, especially in lobbying for government and development partner support to address existing development gaps. The commitment from President Yoweri Museveni to operationalize and expand industrial parks was also recalled as a positive indicator for future job creation.
This renewed push for regional development occurs against a backdrop of ongoing challenges in West Nile, including high youth unemployment, mental health concerns, and limited educational access.
