President Yoweri Museveni has issued a strong defense of Stephen Nuwagaba, a young man at the center of recent media scrutiny. Museveni described Nuwagaba as a victim of torture and trauma, who sought protection after allegedly being targeted by elements within the security services.

In a detailed statement, the President stated that Nuwagaba came to him as a fugitive, suffering from injuries and trauma sustained from alleged torture. Museveni asserted that he has facilitated Nuwagaba’s medical treatment, both locally and abroad, noting that while his condition has improved, some injuries persist.

The President directly addressed accusations leveled by journalist Andrew Mwenda’s Independent Magazine, which had suggested Nuwagaba posed a national security threat. Museveni countered that Mwenda is attempting to divert public attention from more significant issues like corruption and abuses within state institutions, including the security forces.

“The main problem of Uganda is not Nuwagaba seizing State House and the Security Forces but the criminals, including some in the Security Forces and other organs, that have been blocking the flow of information about the criminals,” Museveni stated, questioning Mwenda’s focus on Nuwagaba instead of broader governance challenges.

Museveni emphasized that while any personal wrongdoing by Nuwagaba should be addressed, the alleged torture and abuse by security personnel represent a grave concern for the nation. He questioned if such actions align with the ideals of the liberation struggle, warning that security forces must maintain discipline and avoid committing their own crimes while combating insecurity. The President confirmed that investigations into allegations surrounding Nuwagaba and his family are underway.
