Museveni Denies 'Siege' Allegations, Vows Strict Action Against Torture

President Yoweri Museveni has firmly dismissed allegations that his administration is operating under a ‘siege’ mentality. He stated that such claims are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of governance in Uganda.

The President used the occasion to unequivocally reaffirm the government’s zero-tolerance stance on torture. He emphasized that any state official found to be involved in the brutalization of citizens will face severe consequences.

“We are totally against torture. Nobody should torture anybody. If anybody is found torturing, they will be punished,” President Museveni asserted, sending a clear message to security forces and public servants.

This declaration comes amidst ongoing discussions and concerns regarding human rights practices within certain government bodies. The President’s firm reiteration aims to assure the public and international observers of Uganda’s commitment to upholding human dignity and the rule of law.

He stressed that the government’s primary objective remains the security and well-being of all Ugandans, and that this is achieved through lawful means, not through oppression or mistreatment of individuals. The administration, he noted, is focused on development and ensuring stability, which are incompatible with human rights abuses.

President Museveni’s remarks serve as a public directive to all state agents to adhere strictly to ethical conduct and legal frameworks, particularly when dealing with individuals suspected of wrongdoing. The government intends to investigate all reported cases of torture and ensure accountability.
