The abrupt closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda on June 28, 2026, thrust hundreds of employees into an unfamiliar period of idleness, replacing the usual rush of news cycles with prolonged uncertainty.

For many, accustomed to the relentless pace of deadlines and production schedules, the shutdown necessitated a significant shift in daily life. Deputy News Editor Anthony Wesaka found himself recovering from malaria during the initial days, allowing him to focus on his health. His routine transformed from pre-dawn starts to waking naturally, enjoying family time, and reconnecting with his local church. “The experience reminded me how quickly professional networks can disappear when one is no longer actively working,” Wesaka noted, emphasizing the importance of financial preparedness.

Journalist Maria Jacinta Kannyange adjusted by dedicating mornings to household chores and staying informed through various news sources. She also engaged in online discussions with colleagues and worked on developing a new news website to stay occupied. “It felt strange because my days had always been shaped by deadlines, assignments, and work pressure,” she shared.

Photojournalist Ibrahim Kavuma spent much of his time monitoring news developments on his phone, interspersed with prayer and naps. He noted the significant increase in sleep and the impact on his physical activity due to the lack of demanding assignments. “Sleep took up a significant portion of my day during the shutdown, often exceeding 10 hours,” Kavuma stated.

Despite the initial shock and the growing anxiety about financial stability, many staff members found unexpected blessings in the downtime, including increased family bonding and opportunities for personal projects. The experience underscored the resilience of the NMG team and the critical need for contingency planning.
