The Uganda Police Force has reported a significant success in combating vehicle theft, recovering 46 stolen motor vehicles in June. This achievement highlights the growing effectiveness of the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) in tracking stolen assets and verifying vehicle ownership. Officials indicated that these recoveries represent an impressive 88 percent success rate for the 52 vehicle theft cases reported that month.
The ITMS Monitoring Centre observed a substantial increase in reported incidents, handling 145 vehicle and motorcycle-related cases in June, a near 96 percent rise from the 74 cases recorded in May. This surge is attributed to improved communication channels, including dedicated hotline phones, which have enabled police officers across the country to report incidents more swiftly through the ITMS platform. This enhanced coordination leads to faster response times and more efficient recovery operations.
“The increase in reported incidents is a positive indicator that more police officers are actively utilising the smart platform,” a statement from the Monitoring Centre read. The centre also emphasized the strengthened collaboration with the Police Multimedia Unit, video analysis teams, and the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), which facilitates quicker verification of vehicle records and better operational coordination.
In a separate operation, Kampala Metropolitan Police recovered one suspected stolen motor vehicle and 15 motorcycles believed to have been concealed before sale, alongside one suspected stolen motorcycle. Several arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing. The police are urging the public to report any stolen motorcycles to Wakiso Police Station with proof of ownership to identify potential matches among the recovered vehicles.
The ITMS, currently being deployed nationwide, integrates digital number plates with real-time monitoring technology. This system is proving to be an invaluable tool in the ongoing fight against motor vehicle theft, a persistent challenge, particularly in urban areas like Kampala and its surroundings, by enhancing law enforcement’s crime detection and road safety capabilities.
