UMEA Shifts Focus to Holistic Learning in Muslim Schools

For years, educational success in Uganda has been primarily measured by examination outcomes. However, the Uganda Muslim Education Association (UMEA) believes this narrow focus is insufficient. They are now championing a ‘holistic improvement’ strategy aimed at transforming their schools.

This new approach broadens the scope beyond academics to encompass crucial areas like robust governance, updated infrastructure, continuous teacher development, and the overall welfare of students. According to Nasser Kiwanuka, UMEA’s Assistant Secretary General, academic performance is important but sustainable only when all facets of a school’s operation are strengthened.

“Academic performance will then come as a bonus,” Kiwanuka stated, highlighting the shift towards strengthening infrastructure and service delivery for improved overall functioning.

A core element of UMEA’s strategy is reinforcing school governance. This involves refining the appointment processes for Boards of Governors and School Management Committees, prioritizing competence and proven track records alongside community representation. UMEA is also investing in capacity-building programs for these governance bodies, offering induction, orientation, and ongoing support to ensure effective execution of their roles.

Infrastructure development is another visible priority, addressing issues like inadequate classroom space and outdated learning facilities. UMEA aims to modernize schools, ensuring they are equipped with contemporary facilities, including laboratories and libraries, to meet modern educational standards.

Beyond physical structures, UMEA recognizes the critical role of human capital. Teacher development is being prioritized, focusing on modern teaching methodologies, leadership skills, curriculum implementation, and learner support. To ensure quality, UMEA has also bolstered its inspection and support supervision mechanisms, with dedicated teams assessing performance and providing technical guidance in a supportive, rather than punitive, manner.

UMEA continues to advocate for the integration of religious and secular education, aiming to produce well-rounded individuals who excel academically while maintaining a strong understanding of their faith. This approach seeks to cultivate balanced learners prepared to contribute positively to society.

This holistic model, aligned with national curriculum developments, aims to nurture students’ intellectual, socio-emotional, and practical skills. UMEA schools continue to demonstrate academic strength, with institutions like Kibuli SS and Kawempe Muslim SS performing well in national examinations and excelling in co-curricular activities, showcasing the association’s commitment to holistic education.
