Youth representatives from various districts nationwide have set a firm deadline of August 11 for the National Youth Council (NYC) and the government to convene the annual council meeting. The delegates expressed frustration over alleged sidelining in the meeting’s preparations, raising concerns about accountability for government funds.
Merbal Beinomugisha, the Youth Chairperson for Kayunga District, stated that the meeting is a critical platform for discussing issues impacting young people and demanding transparency in the council’s financial dealings. “The National Youth Council meeting is a legal and important platform for youth representatives from across the country. We demand that the leadership convenes the council on August 11 so that issues of accountability and the welfare of young people can be discussed,” Beinomugisha told journalists.
Beinomugisha warned that if the leadership fails to organize the meeting as stipulated, the delegates will be compelled to seek the resignation of the current NYC Chairperson, Daniel Ongom. This action is intended to push for a more responsive and accountable leadership for the youth.
The delegates also revealed that they have formally lodged a petition with the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Dr. Mercy Faith Lakisa, but have yet to receive a response. They are now urging the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, alongside the NYC leadership, to urgently address their concerns and ensure the annual meeting proceeds as planned on August 11.
