Anita Among Joins 12th Parliament Plenary Virtually

Bukedea District Woman MP and former Speaker, Anita Annet Among, marked her inaugural participation in the 12th Parliament by attending Tuesday’s plenary session virtually.

Among joined the proceedings via Zoom, with the sitting chaired by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa. The agenda included discussions on national matters and the reconsideration of two tax bills that had been sent back by President Yoweri Museveni with specific recommendations.

While her virtual presence was noted, the former Speaker did not actively contribute to the discussions during this particular sitting. Her attendance addresses public curiosity regarding her absence from previous parliamentary sessions.

Under parliamentary rules, MPs are expected to attend sittings unless granted permission or providing a valid reason for absence. Article 83(1)(d) of the Constitution outlines that a Member of Parliament risks losing their seat if they miss 15 sittings without due authorization and a satisfactory explanation.

Later in the session, the Parliament deliberated on and subsequently passed the two tax bills following the President’s recommendations. The House is scheduled to continue its legislative work, addressing outstanding bills and committee reports before its upcoming adjournment for recess.
