Bishop Sanctus Lino Wanok of Nebbi Diocese has stressed the critical importance of shifting from symbolic tree planting to widespread, community-driven reforestation programs. Speaking at a recent event, Bishop Wanok highlighted that individual trees planted without a coordinated strategy are insufficient to combat the escalating problem of desertification.
He urged local leaders to take a more proactive role by identifying specific degraded areas within their communities. These leaders are called upon to mobilize residents, including schools and religious institutions, to engage in planting large numbers of trees in targeted locations. This approach, he believes, is essential for creating a tangible impact on the environment and reversing land degradation.
Bishop Wanok pointed out that the current methods, often characterized by ceremonial planting, do not yield the desired results in the fight against desertification. He stressed that a collective and organized effort is paramount, involving not just planting but also the subsequent care and maintenance of the trees to ensure their survival and growth.
The bishop’s appeal underscores the growing concern over environmental challenges in Uganda, particularly the impact of deforestation and land degradation on agricultural productivity and livelihoods. He reiterated that success depends on sustained, large-scale action rather than isolated, symbolic gestures.
By focusing on mass planting and community participation, Bishop Wanok is advocating for a more robust and effective strategy to protect Uganda’s natural resources and build resilience against climate change. The call is for a unified front where every community member understands their role in environmental stewardship.
