Following concerns raised about uncollected waste after the recent nationwide cleaning day, the Ugandan government has pledged to enhance waste management strategies. Hon. Shamim Malende, Kampala District Woman Representative, highlighted the public health and environmental risks posed by garbage accumulating on streets and in communities, particularly in Kampala.

During a parliamentary sitting, Malende urged the government to outline long-term plans for timely waste collection, transportation, and disposal following such national clean-up initiatives. She noted that the inaugural cleaning day, held on July 25, 2026, while well-intentioned, left behind significant amounts of refuse.

Hon. Ruth Aceng, the Government Chief Whip, acknowledged the challenges encountered during the first event, admitting that the scale of the operation revealed capacity gaps. She assured the house that immediate efforts were underway to clear remaining waste in Kampala and that lessons learned would inform future activities.

“In future, we will have more trucks all over the country because it is a national activity,” Aceng stated, indicating a commitment to scaling up resources for subsequent cleaning days, scheduled for the last Saturday of every month. The government is also exploring partnerships to improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the program.

The national cleaning initiative aims to foster a culture of civic responsibility, improve sanitation, prevent diseases, and protect the environment. The next cleaning day is slated for August 29, 2026, running from 7 am to 10 am.
