Members of Parliament on the Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) have voiced strong concerns regarding the deteriorating state of Uganda’s properties located in Mombasa, Kenya. These assets, valued at approximately Shs96 billion, are reportedly in a state of severe decay, raising questions about their management and the potential loss of significant revenue for the Ugandan government.

The committee’s findings, stemming from an ongoing probe, highlight a worrying trend of neglect, with several properties reportedly falling into disrepair. This dilapidation not only diminishes the aesthetic and structural integrity of the assets but also impacts their income-generating potential through rent collection. MPs are particularly distressed by the reported Shs4.08 billion in unpaid rent, an amount that underscores the financial mismanagement associated with these valuable foreign holdings.

During committee sittings, legislators emphasized the urgent need for intervention to safeguard these assets. They are calling for a comprehensive audit and a clear management plan to restore the properties and ensure efficient rent collection. The current situation is seen as a direct failure of stewardship, potentially leading to a substantial loss of public funds and a dent in Uganda’s international asset portfolio.

COSASE has summoned relevant officials to provide explanations for the current state of affairs and to outline remedial actions. The committee’s objective is to ascertain accountability and push for immediate measures to revive the Mombasa properties and recover outstanding debts, thereby protecting Uganda’s investments abroad.
