Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth has urged a significant recalibration of Parliament, likening the necessary changes to a “factory reset.” He stressed that the institution must refocus on its constitutional mandate, which includes strengthening oversight functions, enhancing accountability mechanisms, and fostering robust committee work.

Oboth articulated these views during a recent meeting with Kenneth Asiimwe, the Chief Editor of 52 Dimensions Magazine. The publication presented the Speaker with a special edition that prominently featured the contributions of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) towards national stability and professionalism.

“Parliament must go back to basics. We need a factory reset that puts accountability at the center, strengthens our committees, and reminds every Member that our primary duty is legislation, oversight and representation,” Oboth stated. He believes that regaining public trust hinges on legislators grounding their debates in factual evidence and demonstrating respect for the distinct roles of other government branches.

“When we respect institutions and focus on our legislative responsibilities, we shall restore the lost glory of this House,” he added, underscoring the importance of institutional integrity and adherence to legislative duties.

The discussed edition of 52 Dimensions Magazine also brought attention to the efforts of the Uganda Childhood Cancer Foundation, documenting their work in supporting children battling cancer. The Speaker commended Asiimwe for his publication’s commitment to showcasing stories of national service and humanitarian endeavors, citing them as sources of patriotism and hope.

Asiimwe explained that the magazine’s objective is to profile leaders and organizations making significant impacts in security, governance, and humanitarian service. These calls for reform arrive at a time when Parliament faces increased public examination regarding its oversight capabilities, effectiveness in service delivery, and the conduct of its members.
