Sentencing proceedings have commenced at the High Court for nine individuals found guilty in the 2018 kidnapping and murder of businesswoman Susan Magara. Justice Alex Mackay Ajiiji is overseeing the case, which has seen the prosecution urge the court to impose the death penalty.
Magara was abducted on February 7, 2018, and held for 20 days before her death on February 27, 2018. Her body was discovered dumped in Kigo, Wakiso District. The kidnappers horrifically severed two of Magara’s fingers, sending them to her family in an envelope along with a flash drive documenting the act, as leverage for ransom.
Despite her family paying $200,000 (approximately Shs700 million), Magara, the daughter of businessman John Magara, was killed. State attorneys Joseph Kyomuhendo and Sherifa Nalwanga characterized the offenses as brutally planned, executed with deliberate cruelty, and driven by financial gain, arguing that both kidnapping for ransom and murder warrant the maximum penalty.
The prosecution highlighted the sophisticated nature of the crime, noting the use of over 20 SIM cards to communicate with the family and frequent changes to avoid detection. Ransom drop-off points were strategically chosen, and the family’s movements were monitored. Even after receiving the substantial ransom, the group proceeded with the murder.
Court documents reveal Magara was held blindfolded, endured the amputation of her fingers by an unqualified individual, and was ultimately suffocated to death before her body was discarded. The convicts reportedly injected her with ketamine and placed a plastic bag over her head.
Prosecutors emphasized that the crime was premeditated and organized, suggesting a sophisticated network rather than an ordinary criminal gang. They are also seeking the recovery and sale of properties, including land and vehicles, reportedly purchased with the ransom money, to provide some solace to Magara’s grieving family.
