Districts in Uganda sharing a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are on high alert, implementing robust strategies to avert any potential re-introduction of the Ebola virus. This heightened vigilance follows the recent declaration of the end of an Ebola outbreak in the DRC.
Health authorities in districts such as Kasese, Bundibugyo, and Kisoro, which have previously been on the frontline of Ebola response, are reactivating and strengthening surveillance systems. This includes rigorous screening of travellers at official and unofficial border crossings, as well as enhancing the capacity of local health facilities to detect and respond to suspected cases promptly.
Community health workers are being retrained and equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to identify symptoms and report them immediately. Awareness campaigns are also being intensified in border communities to educate residents about Ebola prevention methods, including hygiene practices and the importance of reporting any unusual illnesses.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with international health partners, is supporting these efforts by providing essential supplies, logistical support, and technical expertise. The focus is on maintaining a proactive stance, ensuring that surveillance remains active even in the absence of immediate threats, and building resilience within the local health infrastructure.
Officials have stressed that while the immediate threat may have receded, the risk of cross-border transmission remains a concern given the porous nature of the border and regular movements of people between the two countries. Therefore, sustained vigilance and coordinated efforts are crucial to safeguard public health.
