Dangote Refinery, majority-owned by Africa’s richest man Aliko Dangote, is poised to make history with Africa’s largest-ever market listing. The company is seeking to raise around $5 billion through an initial public offering (IPO) expected to be finalized by October.

The significant capital infusion is intended to fuel the expansion of the 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery based in Lagos. Dangote also aims to replicate this success with a similar facility in Kenya, as part of a broader vision to decrease Africa’s reliance on imported fuels and foster continent-wide energy self-sufficiency.

This ambitious IPO has generated considerable interest across the continent. Stock exchanges in South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Ghana, and Rwanda have engaged in discussions with Dangote’s advisors regarding potential participation in the offering. Kenya’s market alone could potentially contribute up to $500 million towards the target.

The refinery has submitted its IPO application to Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission and anticipates approval in the coming weeks, with a prospectus expected in September. While the primary listing will be on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, other African capital markets may offer structured investment solutions like global depositary receipts for their investors.

The planned IPO follows a recent private placement where a 6% stake in the refinery was valued at approximately $40 billion. This valuation, however, appears ambitious when compared to international peers.

Dangote plans to offer investors the flexibility to be paid in either Nigerian Naira or US Dollars. This move aligns with Dangote’s commitment to keeping vast wealth within Nigeria and his vision of developing African champions through pan-African ventures.
