Explosive-Laden Drone Discovered at German Airport

Police in Germany have confirmed the discovery of a drone equipped with an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The suspicious object was found in the cargo operations zone, leading to the immediate deployment of a specialized robot by Saxony police.

In a related incident, another unidentified object reportedly collided with a cargo aircraft near the same airport. While the aircraft landed safely in Hanover, it sustained minor damage.

This discovery occurs amid a backdrop of increased unauthorized drone activity over sensitive locations across Germany, including military installations, airports, and energy hubs. Federal police have acknowledged the heightened security alert, with suggestions that these overflights might be orchestrated by Russian agents.

A police spokesperson indicated that the drone found near parked Ukrainian Antonov transport planes was examined by the Federal Police and an explosive-detection robot. The Federal Police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit successfully removed the detonator from the device.

While flights on the northern runway have since resumed, the southern runway, a critical hub for DHL, remains closed. Saxony’s Interior Minister, Armin Schuster, has characterized the event as a “very serious security incident.”

This incident follows a series of parcel fires at Leipzig airport in July 2024, where explosive devices hidden in massage pillows were suspected to be involved in an attempt to sabotage cargo planes bound for the UK and EU. Russia has denied any connection to these prior events. Last year, a woman was convicted for espionage activities at Leipzig-Halle Airport, passing information about flight and cargo movements to an operative for Beijing.
