Kyambogo University Faces Scrutiny Over Wrong Certificate Awards

Kyambogo University is under intense scrutiny following revelations that it awarded incorrect diploma certificates to government-sponsored students. The State Minister of Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has mandated the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to swiftly investigate the matter.

Reports indicate that students admitted in 2017 for a Diploma in Physical Education and Sports Management were mistakenly awarded a Diploma Certificate in Sports Management upon completion of their studies. This has led to significant distress and confusion for the affected students, who petitioned Parliament for a resolution.

Appearing before the parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports, Minister Ogwang emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, highlighting concerns about academic integrity, student welfare, and the proper use of public funds. He assured the committee that the Ministry, in collaboration with NCHE, would prioritize a thorough investigation to uphold the credibility of Uganda’s higher education system.

While acknowledging the students’ plight, Minister Ogwang stressed that any remedial actions must be lawful and adhere to existing quality assurance frameworks, noting that accreditation cannot be applied retrospectively.

The university’s leadership, however, has faced criticism for its handling of the situation. The Vice-Chancellor’s failure to appear before the parliamentary committee, sending junior officers instead, was met with disapproval. Members of Parliament expressed dismay at the university’s apparent lack of accountability and the prolonged suffering inflicted upon the students.

“The university needs to own their mistakes and reconcile the matter,” stated Hon. Judith Nagujja, reflecting the sentiment of many MPs who felt the university had subjected students to undue stigma and wasted valuable time. Further complicating the issue, Kyambogo University has reportedly failed to respond to inquiries from both the affected students and the NCHE regarding the certificate discrepancies.

Parliamentarians are considering further actions to compel the university’s Vice-Chancellor to appear and address the committee directly, underscoring the urgent need for transparency and resolution. This situation raises critical questions about administrative competence and adherence to academic standards within the institution.
