Uganda’s democratic foundation is built not in the halls of Parliament, but in the everyday interactions within villages—resolving disputes, accessing water, and community meetings. The recent elections for Women Councils and Local Council I (LC1) positions underscore this reality, with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) achieving a significant presence across the country.
According to interim results, the NRM secured a substantial majority of LC1 positions, highlighting a vote of confidence in the party’s ideology and leadership. However, this electoral success is viewed by the NRM not as a mere political triumph, but as a direct mandate from the people, delivered at the closest level of governance. This proximity demands accountability and responsiveness.
The NRM’s commitment to grassroots empowerment is deeply rooted in its history, tracing back to the Resistance Councils. The NRM’s message to its victorious candidates is one of responsibility: listen to all residents, regardless of their vote, and prioritize the improvement of their lives. The party also calls for unity among all candidates, emphasizing a shared commitment to a prosperous Uganda.
The smooth conduct of these elections, acknowledged by the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and voters, sets the stage for action. The focus must now shift from celebration to delivery, with the ultimate measure of success being the tangible betterment of citizens’ lives.
