Parliament Demands Probe into Footballer David Owori's Killing

Parliament has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Uganda Cranes and SC Villa footballer, David Owori, who was attacked and killed by unknown assailants on Tuesday evening. The Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, presiding over the House on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, expressed grave concern over the incident, describing it as a fundamental security matter.

“We are seeing people being attacked by criminals wielding iron bars and other blunt objects,” Tayebwa stated, emphasizing the need for government intervention. Owori was reportedly attacked near Kibuye Primary School in Kampala and later succumbed to his injuries at Case Hospital.

The Chief Opposition Whip, Hon. Paul Mwiru, raised the issue during the parliamentary sitting, demanding a government statement. In response, the Third Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Rukia Isanga Nakadama, conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family and assured that an official statement would follow internal consultations.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa directed the Ministry of Internal Affairs and relevant security agencies to swiftly investigate the circumstances of Owori’s death, ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, and critically review the broader security situation impacting Ugandan citizens. He noted that while Owori’s prominence brought attention to his case, many ordinary citizens suffer similar fates without public notice.
