Uganda Airlines is expanding its regional network with the introduction of daily flights to Kigali, Rwanda, commencing November 18th. This move directly challenges RwandAir’s long-standing dominance on the route between Entebbe and Kigali, which has largely operated without direct competition from Uganda’s national carrier.
In addition to the Kigali service, Uganda Airlines will also operate four weekly flights to Accra, Ghana, starting October 27th. Airline management has identified both destinations as commercially attractive, driven by business, trade, tourism, and investment.
The Kigali route will utilize the airline’s Bombardier CRJ-900 fleet, while the Accra service will be operated by a leased Boeing 737-800. Acting CEO Girma Wake expressed regret that the Kigali route wasn’t launched earlier, highlighting its strategic importance as a major East African business corridor.
For years, RwandAir has been the sole operator of scheduled nonstop passenger flights between Entebbe and Kigali. While other international airlines offer connecting services, they lack the frequency and focus of a dedicated route. Uganda Airlines’ entry is expected to increase competition, offer more travel options, and potentially lead to lower fares for passengers.
“The launch of Accra and Kigali marks another key milestone in Uganda Airlines’ growth strategy,” stated Girma Wake. “As Africa’s connectivity continues to grow, these routes will strengthen commercial and tourism links while offering our guests greater convenience and more travel choices.”
The airline also recently announced an order for eight new Boeing aircraft, including four 737-8s and four 787-9 Dreamliners, signaling a commitment to expanding capacity and long-haul capabilities. This expansion aims to position Entebbe International Airport as a key transit hub for East, Central, and West Africa.
