Uganda Eyes Enhanced Defense Ties with Egypt and Türkiye

Uganda’s Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs is actively pursuing deeper defense collaboration with Egypt and Türkiye. Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka met with military attachés from both nations to discuss enhancing military training programs, fostering technology transfer, and increasing knowledge-sharing.

During discussions with Egypt’s Defence Attaché, Colonel Ahmed Harb, Minister Kiwanuka highlighted the strategic and enduring relationship between Uganda and Egypt, noting shared interests and the historical significance of their ties. He expressed appreciation for ongoing military training exchanges, which have proven beneficial to both the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Egyptian Armed Forces.

Kiwanuka also acknowledged Egypt’s support in areas beyond defense, specifically mentioning assistance with foot-and-mouth disease vaccinations. Colonel Harb reaffirmed Egypt’s dedication to advancing military cooperation and extended an invitation to the minister for the upcoming Egyptian Armed Forces Day celebrations.

In a separate meeting, Minister Kiwanuka engaged with Türkiye’s Military Attaché, Colonel Caner Sağlam. The focus was on deepening the defense partnership, with a particular emphasis on military training and defense technology acquisition. Kiwanuka stressed Uganda’s commitment to strengthening this cooperation, viewing continuous training for UPDF officers as a key priority.

Colonel Sağlam affirmed Türkiye’s commitment to expanding areas of mutual interest and noted the growth in defense relations through existing agreements, training programs, and joint exercises. These engagements underscore Uganda’s broader strategy to enhance its military professionalism and capabilities through international partnerships.

These efforts align with Uganda’s ongoing initiative to build robust defense partnerships aimed at improving military readiness and promoting regional security.
