Young people in Uganda have been challenged to take a front-line role in addressing the escalating climate crisis. Experts emphasized that the impacts of climate change are no longer a future threat but a present reality, manifesting as floods, droughts, wildfires, and severe food insecurity.

Dr. Robin Nandy, UNICEF Representative to Uganda, highlighted the immediate and devastating effects of climate change during the opening of a three-day national conference in Kampala. He noted that millions, particularly children and young people, are already bearing the brunt of this crisis. Dr. Nandy pointed to the tragic loss of life in Uganda’s Karamoja region due to food insecurity, exacerbated by climate change, as a stark example of the urgent need for action.

The conference, themed “Children and Youth-led Climate Action and Innovations for Resilience and Development,” aims to empower young Ugandans. With Uganda boasting one of the world’s youngest populations, integrating youth perspectives into the national climate agenda is seen as critical. The insights and innovations generated will contribute to a national youth and children’s climate statement, intended for presentation at COP31 in Turkey.

British High Commissioner to Uganda, Lisa Chesney, stressed that while governments must set policies and mobilize resources, meaningful climate action necessitates placing young people at the center of decision-making processes at both national and global levels. The event also features a showcase of innovative solutions developed by young Ugandan innovators.

Organizers intend for the conference to equip attendees with the knowledge, skills, and platforms needed to champion climate resilience, influence policy, and develop practical responses to environmental challenges impacting their communities.
