Professor Venacius Baryamureeba, a former presidential candidate and proprietor of Utamu University, has put forward a notable suggestion to President Yoweri Museveni regarding the Ministry of Education and Sports. He has called for the appointment of the President’s daughter, Natasha Museveni Karugire, to the ministerial position, advocating for her to succeed Janet Museveni.
Baryamureeba explained his rationale on the social platform X, emphasizing the need for continuity within the ministry. He noted that Janet Museveni has been recovering from an illness that has kept her from public duties since March, and suggested that Natasha’s stepping in would ensure a smooth transition.
“Now is the time for transition from Mama Janet to Natasha at the Ministry of Education and Sports,” Baryamureeba stated. He also advised that while prayers continue for the First Lady’s full recovery, her personal health should be the priority, given the demanding nature of her role as Minister and First Lady.
Janet Museveni, who has held the Education portfolio since 2016, has been recuperating since March. President Museveni recently disclosed that she had a close call with a life-threatening medical condition. Although she has since expressed gratitude for public support and prayers, she has not yet returned to public engagements or been formally sworn in for another term.
Baryamureeba believes Natasha Karugire possesses the necessary experience and exposure for the role. He pointed to her involvement in presidential campaign trails, which has provided her with insights into the needs of Ugandans in the education and sports sectors. He also suggested she would benefit from mentorship from both the President and the First Lady.
He further highlighted her potential to mobilize resources, stating, “Ministry of Education and Sports is a ministry that requires a lot of financing and she has the capacity to lobby the President, Ministry of Finance and even Parliament to ensure the MoES is well funded.” Baryamureeba concluded that such an appointment would facilitate a seamless succession and guarantee stability in the education and sports sectors.
This proposal comes amid ongoing discussions about leadership transitions, with State Minister for Higher Education, Dr. John Chrysestom Muyingo, currently acting as the interim minister. Natasha Museveni Karugire has not publicly expressed interest in the position, nor has there been any official indication from State House about replacing the First Lady.
