Buganda Premier Urges Legislators to Lead with Ideas, Not Titles

Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga has urged legislators within the Buganda Lukiiko to prioritize the generation of impactful ideas over the mere holding of titles. Speaking at the opening of the Buganda Lukiiko retreat, Mayiga emphasized that true leadership stems from integrity, professionalism, and a dedicated commitment to public service.

The retreat, themed “Raising the Standard and Conduct of Members of the Buganda Lukiiko,” serves as a platform for members to reflect on their performance and strategize on enhancing their service to the people of Buganda. Speaker Patrick Luwaga Mugumbule highlighted the retreat’s importance in fostering unity and aligning legislative work with the Kingdom’s objectives.

Katikkiro Mayiga stressed that the effectiveness of the Lukiiko should be measured by the quality of ideas produced, stating that “Nations develop because of ideas. When ideas are lacking, development stagnates.” He called upon members to move beyond ceremonial roles and actively contribute solutions to Buganda’s challenges, urging them to understand and improve upon initiatives such as the Mwanyi Terimba coffee campaign and housing projects.

Mayiga encouraged a critical assessment of existing programs, prompting legislators to consider how they can enhance agricultural practices and ensure the sustainability of businesses within the Kingdom. He noted the historical evolution of the Lukiiko from a council of clan leaders to a modern legislative body, underscoring its continuous mission to strengthen the Kingdom and improve the welfare of its people.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister reminded members that respect is earned through actions and character, not just official positions. He stated that true leadership is demonstrated through discipline, humility, and a steadfast dedication to service. The retreat aims to facilitate deliberations on strengthening representation, improving program oversight, and enhancing the Lukiiko’s overall contribution to Buganda’s development.
