For Patrick Mugyenyi, purchasing his first car was a significant milestone, intended to ease family life. However, his 1997 silver Toyota Raum, affectionately nicknamed ‘Lubalusewo’ by his wife, proved to be more of a challenge than a convenience.
“Lubalusewo” – a name that translates to ‘it has stopped again’ – was a fitting moniker for a vehicle prone to unexpected breakdowns. Mugyenyi recounts instances where the car would die mid-journey or refuse to start altogether, leading to costly repairs and frustrating delays.
One particularly memorable incident involved a trip to procure medicine for his pregnant wife. What should have been a straightforward drive to Mukono turned into a two-day ordeal, spanning over 100 kilometers with multiple breakdowns and an overnight stay in a roadside establishment. The car’s unpredictable nature meant simple tasks, like reaching a pharmacy, became complex expeditions.
Despite the constant troubles, Mugyenyi acknowledges the lessons learned. He describes the car’s frequent failures as a harsh but effective teacher, instilling a deep sense of responsibility. “It taught me that a car is not just a machine. It is a responsibility,” he stated, comparing it to caring for a newborn.
Mugyenyi’s experience highlights the emotional attachment many form with their first vehicles, even those that cause significant stress. While he wouldn’t recommend ‘Lubalusewo’ again, he credits it with teaching him invaluable life lessons about perseverance and accountability.
