Rwanda Halts 10 Ugandan Alcohol Brands Over Standards Concerns

The Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority (RFDA) has issued a temporary suspension for ten alcoholic beverages originating from Uganda, demanding their immediate recall from the market. This action forms part of a broader suspension affecting 52 imported alcoholic products across Rwanda, all flagged for issues related to their standards.

The affected Ugandan brands include Bond 7 Whisky, Campfire Gin, Club 5 Gin, Tembo Liqueur, X5 Gin, Jonney’s Gin, X5 Liqueur, Pan Master Whisky, X5 Whisky, Gilbey’s Flavoured Gin, and V&A Imp Cr Lqr. Importers are mandated to retrieve all existing stock from distributors and clients, with recall reports due within three days of the August 5 announcement.

This regulatory move follows a stark warning from Rwandan President Paul Kagame regarding the detrimental impact of alcohol consumption on the nation’s youth. During a July 29 meeting, President Kagame expressed deep concern that alcohol is “killing young people” and hindering their ability to achieve their ambitions and contribute to the country’s development.

In the wake of the President’s address, the RFDA also shut down several local alcohol manufacturing factories and prohibited the distribution of their products as a measure to safeguard public health. Rwanda is known for its stringent regulations concerning alcohol, including specific operating hours for bars and nightclubs.
