In a significant political development, 55 independent Members of Parliament have signed a cooperation agreement with the National Resistance Movement (NRM). The deal, inked at Parliament, signifies a commitment from these legislators to work alongside the NRM’s Parliamentary Caucus and to lend their support to government initiatives on the floor of the House.
Government Chief Whip Dr. Ruth Aceng stated that the agreement permits the independent MPs to participate in Caucus activities while obligating them to back government business. This arrangement effectively allows for closer collaboration without altering the MPs’ independent status.
NRM Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja, who was present at the signing, indicated that this group represents those who have already expressed interest in working with the NRM. She also mentioned that discussions are ongoing with other independent MPs to potentially expand this cooperation.
Namayanja clarified a previous misunderstanding, refuting reports that a similar agreement had been signed in May. She emphasized that the Thursday signing marks the first formal cooperation pact with this particular bloc of independent legislators.
The core of the agreement allows the 55 MPs to consult with the NRM Parliamentary Caucus and cooperate on government matters. This strategic move is expected to bolster the NRM’s parliamentary strength and coordination capabilities, particularly as the government gears up for important legislative tasks.
The pact offers the ruling party a broader base of support within Parliament, enhancing its ability to navigate and advance its legislative agenda without necessitating formal party affiliation from the involved independent members.
