In a groundbreaking development, scientists have employed artificial intelligence to engineer novel viruses from scratch. This marks the first instance where AI has successfully designed complete viral genomes that are functional and can replicate under laboratory conditions.
The 16 new viruses created by the AI are designed to infect bacteria, posing no threat to humans. Researchers view this breakthrough as a potential “very significant turning point” in science, opening doors to new approaches for treating diseases, particularly those resistant to antibiotics.
The AI models, named Evo1 and Evo2, function similarly to large language models, but instead of predicting text, they predict the ‘language’ of life – genetic codes. Trained on genetic data from various organisms, these models were refined to generate bacteriophages, viruses that specifically target bacteria.
Stanford University researchers selected the most promising AI-generated designs and synthesized them. Of these, 16 proved effective at eliminating E. coli bacteria, an outcome that generated considerable excitement among the scientific team.
While the potential for developing new antimicrobial therapies is immense, experts are also highlighting “urgent” safety and security concerns. The ability of AI to design novel biological agents raises questions about potential misuse for creating new diseases. Commentators have stressed that while designing viral genomes with AI is now a reality, ensuring it’s not used for “enabling serious harm” is paramount.
The researchers themselves implemented safety measures, excluding viruses infectious to complex organisms from their training data and conducting work on bacteriophages in a secure lab. They believe existing safeguards are sufficient for ensuring the technology is used for beneficial purposes.
This advancement in synthetic biology, where AI designs biology from computer code to actual biological entities, is seen as a major milestone. While creating simple organisms with AI is still a considerable undertaking, researchers express interest in pursuing such capabilities, envisioning a future where AI could help tackle major human health challenges.
