Senator Lisa Murkowski has declared her intention to vote against Todd Blanche, President Trump’s nominee for Attorney General, signaling significant opposition to his permanent placement in the role. Murkowski, a Republican from Alaska, cited her deep-seated concerns over what she described as the “politicization - even weaponization - of the Department of Justice.”
In a statement posted on X, Murkowski asserted that while the issue didn’t originate with the current administration, its acceleration has been pronounced. The Senator’s opposition, particularly after Senator Susan Collins also indicated she would not support Blanche, puts the nominee’s confirmation in serious jeopardy. Republicans hold a slim majority in the Senate, making the defection of even a few key votes critical.
Murkowski pointed to specific controversies that have arisen during Blanche’s interim leadership, including the handling of the Epstein files and the establishment of a settlement fund that critics feared could benefit individuals involved in the January 6th Capitol attack. She expressed a desire for an Attorney General who would act as a check on the administration’s “worst impulses.”
The White House, through press secretary Karoline Leavitt, acknowledged Murkowski’s decision as “disappointing” but maintained that Blanche is “exceptionally qualified” and should be confirmed. President Trump himself had previously expressed confidence in Blanche’s ability to “survive” the confirmation process, even stating his intention to keep him as acting Attorney General indefinitely should he fail to be confirmed.
Blanche, who previously served as deputy attorney general, stepped into the acting role in April. The nomination’s precarious state highlights the deep divisions within the Republican party regarding the direction and perceived integrity of the Justice Department. The outcome remains uncertain, with the votes of key senators like Bill Cassidy yet to be declared.
