MTN Uganda and Afro Mobile have joined forces to launch MTN TV by Afro Mobile, a new digital entertainment platform. This venture is set to broaden access to a variety of local and international content, while simultaneously fostering new avenues for Ugandan creators to exhibit and earn from their work.
During the launch event, MTN Uganda’s CEO, Sylvia Mulinge, highlighted the platform’s development as a response to the increasing demand for easily accessible digital entertainment. “People want to watch football, catch up on movies and listen to music,” Mulinge stated. “When we put the internet in the hands of a customer, there must be a compelling reason for them to click on their browser.”
Mulinge further emphasized content’s critical role in the digital economy, describing it as a significant demographic and economic driver. The platform is intended to provide a clear pathway for creators to produce, discover, and engage audiences with their content.
Kevin Kaija, General Manager at Afro Mobile, described the partnership with MTN Uganda as a strategic alignment that will unlock the potential of Uganda’s creative industry. He believes this collaboration will open up the global digital economy to Ugandan creators, enabling them to reach audiences beyond national borders.
Filmmaker Eleanor Nabwiso welcomed the initiative, noting that it addresses long-standing challenges in the industry related to funding and distribution. “This platform will help solve the long-standing problems of funding and distribution that many filmmakers and content creators have faced for years,” Nabwiso commented.
Fred Otunu, representing the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), acknowledged the transformative growth in Uganda’s digital content sector, presenting considerable opportunities for creators. However, he urged platforms to maintain public trust through reliability, quality service, and regulatory compliance.
The introduction of MTN TV by Afro Mobile is anticipated to enhance Uganda’s digital entertainment landscape by connecting audiences with diverse content and opening commercial avenues for local talent. It aims to position Ugandan creators to effectively compete in the global digital marketplace.
