President Yoweri Museveni has charged National Resistance Movement (NRM) Members of Parliament with the critical task of tackling corruption and upholding party integrity. Speaking at the NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting at Speke Resort Munyonyo, the President emphasized that graft at all levels weakens government institutions and erodes public trust.
He urged MPs to actively monitor government programs and expose officials involved in the embezzlement of public funds. President Museveni expressed particular concern over corruption within the health sector, citing the theft of medicines and the concerning absenteeism of doctors. He noted that many public hospitals are primarily served by medical interns because full-time doctors often prioritize their private practices.
“We have got a lot of doctors. Some of the doctors are even not working in the government—they don’t have jobs,” President Museveni stated, indicating a potential policy shift. He plans to propose changes to the public health staffing structure, which could involve replacing absentee doctors with unemployed young medical professionals. The President also stressed the importance of preventive healthcare and addressing issues like sanitation and aflatoxin contamination.
Furthermore, the President addressed concerns about industrialization being hampered by corrupt officials who extort investors, leading some businesses to relocate. He pledged government action to purge corrupt networks hindering development and job creation.
The caucus meeting also saw Deputy Secretary General Rose Namayanja Nsereko present recent NRM electoral successes, though President Museveni cautioned against ignoring flaws in party primaries that lead committed members to run as independents. Resolutions passed included strengthening the fight against corruption, safeguarding Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, and supporting key government investments.
