The Uganda Professional Teachers’ Union (UPTU) has issued a stern warning to science teachers nationwide, urging them to abstain from alcohol abuse. The union emphasized the critical role science teachers play in shaping the future generation and stressed the importance of upholding professional integrity.
UPTU Secretary General Mr. James Tweheyo highlighted that alcohol consumption among teachers, particularly those in science fields, can lead to a decline in their performance and negatively influence student behavior. He noted that such conduct undermines the respect and authority teachers are expected to command in the classroom and community.
“Science teachers are expected to be role models for students, especially in critical thinking and problem-solving. Substance abuse can cloud judgment and impair their ability to effectively impart knowledge and skills,” Mr. Tweheyo stated in a recent address. He added that the union has received “disturbing reports” regarding the prevalence of alcohol abuse among some educators.
The union is advocating for stricter adherence to professional codes of conduct and has pledged to take disciplinary action against any member found engaging in practices that bring disrepute to the teaching profession. UPTU believes that a clear stance against alcohol abuse is essential for fostering a conducive learning environment and ensuring the quality of education in Uganda.
UPTU’s appeal extends beyond just science teachers, encouraging all educators to prioritize their health and professional responsibilities. The union plans to engage in sensitization programs and provide support mechanisms for teachers struggling with substance abuse issues, aiming to address the root causes and promote a healthier, more professional teaching force.
