Girma Wake, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Airlines, has shared positive developments regarding the airline’s operational performance, emphasizing improved reliability and network strengthening. These advancements are being made despite significant fleet constraints, primarily due to engine issues affecting a substantial portion of the airline’s aircraft.
Wake noted a marked improvement in schedule reliability over the past four to five months, with a significant reduction in flight cancellations and enhanced on-time performance. Reorganized flight schedules are also facilitating better passenger connectivity to long-haul destinations, a move expected to boost revenue.
The airline’s financial performance has been hampered by engine problems grounding two Airbus A330s and one CRJ aircraft, necessitating leased planes to maintain operations. The CRJ is anticipated to return to service within two weeks, with the remaining A330 expected by January next year, which should positively impact financial outcomes. Wake clarified that while the engine overhauls are funded through an existing maintenance program, interim funding for leased aircraft is being sought through the government budget.
New routes to Accra and Kigali have been launched to bolster the airline’s network. The Accra route aims to strengthen the West African presence, with plans to combine it with Lagos initially to build passenger traffic. The Kigali route, despite existing competition, is seen as beneficial, potentially stimulating demand through increased flight frequency and competitive fares.
Looking ahead, Uganda Airlines is focused on building a reliable network and enhancing connectivity rather than solely competing on size. While Southern African routes have underperformed due to scheduling and connectivity issues, efforts are underway to rectify this. The long-term vision includes the acquisition of eight Boeing aircraft, with deliveries expected from 2032, aiming to position the airline for efficient utilization and sustainable growth.
