During a Holy Mass at Rubaga Cathedral, Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of Kampala issued a solemn charge to nine newly ordained priests and six deacons. He urged them to dedicate their ministry to serving the faithful, emphasizing that their role is one of service rather than personal recognition or honor.
The Archbishop highlighted the significant challenges many Ugandans are currently enduring. He specifically implored the new clergy to extend pastoral care and comfort to those in distress, including individuals held in prisons and detention centers, some of whom may not even know the charges against them.
“You must be there to comfort them, reassure them and give them hope in every situation,” Ssemogerere stated, underscoring the importance of listening to the spiritual and emotional needs of the people.
He further encouraged the newly ordained to maintain a deep prayer life, faithfully administer the sacraments, and remain steadfast in their love and commitment to the Catholic Church. The ceremony, attended by family, fellow clergy, and numerous Catholic faithful, also saw the Archbishop thanking parents, formators, and supporters for their roles in the candidates’ journeys.
The ordination rite included traditional elements such as the laying on of hands, anointing with sacred Chrism for the priests, and the presentation of sacred vessels, symbolizing their new responsibilities. The newly ordained clergy pledged to serve God’s people with dedication and humility.
