This August marks the retirement of 1,591 Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel, a group that includes high-ranking officers such as former Chief of Defence Forces, General Katumba Wamala.
The nationwide exercise will see officers and militants from all ranks, from generals down to privates, transition to civilian life. The outgoing contingent is comprised of 19 general officers, 222 senior officers, 205 junior officers, and 1,364 militants.
Notable figures slated for retirement alongside Gen. Wamala include Lt. Gen. Charles Awany Otema (former Joint Chief of Staff), Lt. Gen. Charles Angina (former Deputy CDF), and Maj. Gen. Leopold Kyanda. Also on the list are Maj. Gen. Godfrey Katsigazi Tumusiime (former Deputy IGP) and Maj. Gen. Abel Kandiho (former Joint Intelligence Director).
Ceremonies are planned to honor these retiring officers. The senior officers, holding ranks from Major to Colonel, will be celebrated on August 12 at the Joint Services Headquarters in Mbuya. A separate event for the 19 general officers will be scheduled to provide them with full military honors befitting their careers.
Col. Chris Magezi, acting Director of Defence Public Information, stated that these ceremonies are a tradition to recognize the courage, discipline, and devotion of UPDF personnel, celebrating both leadership and lower ranks for their roles in safeguarding Uganda and contributing to regional stability.
To aid in their transition, the UPDF has been conducting financial literacy workshops for the retiring personnel. Maj. Gen. James Kinalwa advised retirees to manage their finances prudently to avoid difficulties after leaving the army, emphasizing the need for sustainable income streams.
The retirements follow a recent recruitment drive by the UPDF to fill staffing needs. The UPDF maintains that these ongoing retirement processes are part of its commitment to developing a professional and modern military force while respecting the service of its long-standing members.
