Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babalanda, has urged voters in the Busoga region to actively participate and vote for candidates backed by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the forthcoming Local Council II (LC2) elections.
During a press briefing, Babalanda conveyed President Museveni’s greetings and commended Busoga’s support for the NRM in recent LC1 elections. She encouraged a repeat of this support, emphasizing the need for leaders who can effectively deliver services and champion government initiatives.
The Minister stressed that all Ugandans deserve quality services and economic opportunities, which she believes are best achieved through cooperative leadership committed to national development. She directed Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), Resident City Commissioners (RCCs), and security agencies to ensure a secure and peaceful electoral process.
Babalanda specifically tasked security forces with protecting voters, candidates, and election officials, aiming to prevent any recurrence of violence, such as the fatalities reported during the LC1 elections in Buwenge, Jinja District.
She highlighted the critical role of parish-level leaders in implementing government wealth creation programs, particularly the Parish Development Model (PDM). These leaders are instrumental in educating communities about initiatives like PDM, Emyooga, and Operation Wealth Creation (OWC).
Furthermore, Babalanda emphasized that LC2 leaders, parish chiefs, and other local officials must collaborate to identify and support households transitioning from subsistence farming to the money economy. She also called for enhanced oversight to ensure government funds are utilized effectively and responsibly.
Recalling the electoral process for Parish/Ward Council Chairpersons, Babalanda reminded voters that the method involves lining up behind their preferred candidate. She reiterated her plea for a large turnout, peaceful conduct, and the election of capable leaders who will partner with the government to drive local development and transform parishes.
