Inspire Africa Chief Executive Officer Nelson Tugume is urging Ugandans to shift their perspectives on investments and development projects. He asserts that prevalent negative attitudes and resistance towards investors are significant impediments to the nation’s economic growth and job creation efforts.

Tugume emphasized the importance of communities welcoming investments that enhance Uganda’s raw materials, create employment opportunities, and open up new markets for local products. He made these remarks during a stakeholders’ dinner at the Inspire Africa Coffee Park in Ntungamo, where he criticized what he termed an “evil spirit” of negativity surrounding development initiatives.

Specifically addressing residents of Ntungamo and Kajara, Tugume implored them to support the proposed “coffee city,” a special economic zone planned for the Inspire Africa Coffee Park. He believes this project has the potential to profoundly transform the region over the next few decades, emphasizing that such initiatives are crucial for national progress.

He argued that negative attitudes towards investment are a contributing factor to Africa’s ongoing poverty and underdevelopment. Tugume used Uganda’s coffee industry as an illustration, pointing out that the country exports much of its coffee in raw form, allowing international buyers and processors to capture greater profits from value-added products.

“Africa must learn to process its own raw materials, create wealth, expand markets and compete on the international stage,” Tugume stated, advocating for investment in processing facilities to retain more value within Uganda.

Addressing past concerns about the Coffee Park, where some residents feared land displacement, Tugume dismissed what he called misinformation. He encouraged residents to seek direct clarification from investors and authorities rather than opposing development based on rumors, as such misinformation can deter investment and deprive communities of potential economic benefits.

Local leaders and farmers present at the dinner expressed support for the project. Ntungamo District Chairperson Samuel Muchunguzi advised farmers to strengthen cooperatives for better bargaining power and to benefit from value addition. Farmer Gregory Mugisha Muntu also called for a collective effort to overcome negative attitudes hindering development.

The Inspire Africa Coffee Park, a significant coffee value-addition project, aims to process Ugandan coffee into various finished products and foster coffee tourism. With support from the government, the facility has made progress, including exports and employing over 600 Ugandans, with plans for further expansion.
