Ugandan Cadets Shine at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Securing Top Honors

Uganda is celebrating a dual success at the prestigious Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, as two cadets have distinguished themselves during the recent Sovereign’s Parade.

Officer Cadet Andrew Bakira Ruyondo received the coveted International Sword, an award presented to the overseas cadet who demonstrates exceptional overall performance. This accolade recognizes outstanding leadership, resilience, attitude, and military skills honed over the demanding 44-week course.

Bakira, hailing from Kazo District, was among 247 cadets commissioned during the ceremony. His parents traveled from Uganda to witness this significant achievement. His name has now been etched on the academy’s honours board, signifying his remarkable accomplishment.

The event also marked the commissioning of Ruhamya Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The presence of both families celebrating together highlighted the shared journey of these young officers.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a Sandhurst alumnus himself, expressed pride in his son’s progress, noting the generational continuation of military tradition. Both Bakira and Ruhamya were sponsored by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and trained collaboratively through various stages of the intense program.

This achievement underscores Uganda’s enduring connection with Sandhurst, a globally recognized institution for military leadership development.
