Ugandans can now anticipate a more consistent and dependable electricity supply following the successful conclusion of the Kampala Metropolitan Transmission System Improvement Project. This extensive initiative, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and executed by the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) in partnership with a consortium of Japanese and Chinese firms, has been delivered on schedule.
The JPY 14.5 billion project, approximately $92.3 million, was designed to bolster the strength, stability, and resilience of the nation’s power transmission grid. Officials have highlighted that the upgrade will translate into increased electricity capacity, fewer power interruptions, and a more robust supply for households, commercial enterprises, and industries throughout the greater Kampala metropolitan area.
For businesses, this enhanced reliability is crucial for maintaining productivity, ensuring business continuity, and supporting future expansion. Previously, frequent power outages, often necessitated by the replacement of older, lower-capacity wires with new ones capable of meeting Kampala’s growing demand, had been a persistent concern for residents and industries, which account for over 60% of the country’s electricity consumption.
While the project is largely complete, with key components like transmission reconductoring finished, some substation works in Mukono and Kawaala are expected to conclude by February 2027. Upon full completion, the project is projected to significantly improve power reliability and system stability in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area. It will also reduce transmission bottlenecks, enhance voltage performance, minimize outages, and create the necessary capacity to foster future economic development and industrial growth. This upgrade is also anticipated to strengthen investor confidence in Uganda’s energy sector, positioning the country as a more competitive investment hub within the region.
