Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has urged newly ordained priests and deacons to embrace humility, compassion, and inclusivity as they commence their spiritual duties within the Catholic Church. Tayebwa made these remarks during the ordination ceremony for eight priests and sixteen deacons held at Nyamitanga Cathedral in the Mbarara Archdiocese.

He highlighted the significant role of these newly ordained clergy members, describing them as vital ambassadors for the Church. Their mission, Tayebwa noted, is to foster unity, promote peace, and cultivate social harmony within their respective communities.

The Deputy Speaker also took the opportunity to commend the Catholic Church for actively supporting the government’s poverty-eradication initiatives at both household and community levels. He affirmed that these efforts are instrumental in enhancing the well-being and livelihoods of Ugandans.

Tayebwa pledged the government’s continued collaboration with the Church and other development partners to tackle challenges facing the citizenry. He specifically identified corruption within the Parish Development Model (PDM), in job recruitment processes, and within public health facilities as areas demanding immediate attention, stressing that public resources must be utilized effectively for the benefit of intended recipients.

Furthermore, Tayebwa acknowledged the Catholic Church’s support for government programs and its constructive role during recent elections. He expressed gratitude for the Church’s prayers for national leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni. Tayebwa concluded by reiterating the indispensable nature of the partnership between the government and the Church in advancing development, peace, unity, and the overall welfare of the Ugandan people.
