FDC Opposes UPDF Deployment to Gaza, Cites NAM Conflict

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has voiced strong opposition to the planned deployment of Ugandan troops to Gaza, arguing it undermines the nation's role as chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The party contends the move aligns Uganda with U.S. foreign policy objectives, contradicting NAM's core principles. Source: https://nilepost.co.ug/news/362212/fdc-says-no-to-updf-deployment-in-gaza

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has declared its opposition to the potential deployment of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to Gaza as part of a proposed International Stabilization Force (ISF).

According to FDC Deputy President Hassan Kaps Fungaroo, Uganda’s participation in such a force would significantly damage its standing as the current chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Fungaroo stated that aligning with a U.S.-backed military framework in Gaza would make Uganda an “ally of a superpower (USA) in its wars of conquest and global domination,” directly contradicting NAM’s foundational philosophy.

The FDC highlighted NAM’s historical commitment to Palestinian self-determination, its opposition to foreign military intervention, and its promotion of national sovereignty. The party argues that Uganda cannot champion these principles while contributing to a U.S.-conceived mission in Gaza.

Furthermore, the FDC raised concerns about the parliamentary process that approved the deployment, alleging that Members of Parliament did not have sufficient time for scrutiny. They described the motion as having been “hurriedly tabled and passed without sufficient debate, committee scrutiny, risk assessment or a cost-benefit analysis.”

The opposition party stressed the need for Parliament to thoroughly assess the risks Ugandan soldiers might face, including potential casualties, and to clarify arrangements for insurance, compensation, and the mission’s financial costs.

The FDC has formally demanded that Uganda withdraw its commitment to the Gaza mission and reaffirm its dedication to NAM principles concerning Palestine. The party asserts that Uganda must choose between its non-aligned status and becoming a military ally of the United States.

Uganda’s Parliament recently voted to approve the deployment of UPDF troops to Gaza, should they be required for a multinational security force under a U.S.-proposed ceasefire plan. The government’s potential involvement was publicly acknowledged during a parliamentary debate, following discussions between President Museveni and international emissaries.
