Yasiin Sekitoleko, a prominent supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and widely recognized as ‘Machete’, has emerged from six years of incarceration with an unwavering commitment to fighting for political transformation in Uganda. Sekitoleko, recently released under an amnesty, stated that his harrowing experiences in prison have only fortified his determination.
Upon his return to his ancestral home in Banga Village, Kamengo Sub-county, Mpigi District, Sekitoleko was met with an emotional outpouring from family, friends, and residents. A Duwa, a special prayer, was held to celebrate his release and express gratitude for his survival.
During the prayers, religious leaders condemned the misuse of religion to justify violence and highlighted the plight of Muslims in Uganda, many of whom they allege are unfairly imprisoned. Sheikh Umar Magezi questioned the government’s practices, particularly regarding prolonged detentions without clear convictions, citing Sekitoleko’s case.
Former Mawokota North MP Hillary Kiyaga Innocent commended Sekitoleko for his resilience and loyalty to the NUP, contrasting his steadfastness with that of others who may have cooperated with authorities to secure release. Kiyaga also criticized Ugandans for perceived inaction in addressing the country’s long-standing political challenges.
Sekitoleko himself recounted severe alleged torture following his 2020 arrest, describing inhumane conditions in detention, including extended periods in a basement-like facility and a cell where he endured extreme suffering. Despite these ordeals, which he claims have left lasting physical and emotional scars, Sekitoleko maintains that his spirit remains unbroken and his fight for what he believes is right will continue until death or significant political change is achieved.
