Uganda’s first National Cleaning Day, held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, witnessed a robust response from communities across the nation. Residents in numerous villages enthusiastically participated in cleaning their environments, gathering waste and placing it at designated roadside points.
This nationwide cleanup initiative was established by a Cabinet decision to observe the last Saturday of each month as National Cleaning Day, with its approval coming on August 11, 2025, under the leadership of President Yoweri Museveni. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja formally announced and launched the program.
Despite the high level of public participation, a significant logistical challenge emerged: a shortage of waste collection trucks. Reports from local leaders indicate that approximately 70 percent of the collected waste remained at disposal points, as municipal and district authorities were reportedly unprepared due to inadequate prior notification for mobilizing necessary vehicles.
NRM analyst Ssendagire Kasirye Muhammad highlighted that the program’s success is hindered by its nature as a directive rather than a mandate with penalties. He noted that the initial focus on residential and market areas also meant that busy commercial hubs, like downtown Kampala, received less attention.
Authorities are now reportedly considering adjustments for the upcoming National Cleaning Day on August 29, 2026. Plans include increasing the number of garbage trucks to ensure efficient waste removal and addressing logistical gaps identified during the first exercise. While the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to release an official impact report, the government maintains that the monthly campaign aims to foster a lasting culture of cleanliness and environmental stewardship throughout Uganda.
